What is Liposuction?
A common procedure that has seen many advances, liposuction is a safe and effective procedure for removing stubborn pockets of fat in the hips, thighs, abdomen, knees, ankles, face, and neck. Although it is a stand-alone procedure, it can also be performed along with other procedures in order to further improve the contours of the body. These options will be discussed with you during your visit.
During liposuction, small incisions are placed in discreet locations along treated areas. A tool called a cannula, which is connected to a suctioning machine, is then inserted through the incision to gently break the fat up and extract it from underneath the skin. Advances in this technique have made it significantly less traumatic to the body, resulting in less bruising and recovery time. Using the latest technology, Dr. Singhal performs this under minimal sedation, with tumescent anesthesia that keeps you comfortable, helps break away the fat and allow easy removal via suction. You will remain very comfortable on the day of your procedure.
Depending on the number of areas being treated, a single liposuction session only takes about an hour. Although multiple sites can be targeted, there is a limit to how much liposuction can be performed at one time in order to maintain the safety of the procedure.
Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Individuals with good skin tone who have localized fatty deposits and realistic expectations are typically approved for this procedure. During your consultation, your medical history will be reviewed and a general examination will be performed to check your overall health. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, and those who are participating in a weight loss program should ideally reach their target weight before considering surgery. If you have loose skin, possibly due to recent large volume weight loss, you may be better candidate for a lift procedure in place of liposuction alone.
As future weight gain can impede the results of liposuction, patients should be prepared to adopt a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise in order to maintain their results.
What is Recovery Like?
Although, bruising and swelling are common after liposuction, a compression garment will be placed on you to support your new contours and assist the healing process. There are no stitches to remove and swelling should subside within two weeks. You will be given a pair of secondary compression garments to help you achieve the final results. Although results are immediately noticeable, it will take a few weeks for the full results to become evident.
During the healing process, you may be advised to wear sunscreen routinely, as decreased sensation during this time may make your skin vulnerable. Complications are possible, but when the procedure is performed by experienced plastic surgeons such as Dr. Singhal, they are rare.
